The natural world is dying. This is the doomsday battle cry of each and every conservationist that most people have learned to completely ignore. Its so convenient to live in little cocoons and to ignore things like deforestation, pollution, poaching and global warming. This mentality has done much harm. According to al-Faithi, sustained investment is needed mainly to combat the decline in output at existing fields, which will drop by almost two-thirds by 20303.

New legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate this month will allow qualified renewable energy projects to exchange their tax credits for grants from the Treasury Department. The new measure, authored by senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), will fund up to 30 percent of project costs for wind, solar, biomass, and certain other project,s until 2012. This new legislation expands and extends a present-day Treasury Department grant program, which expires in 2010, for two more years. Estimates call for $3 billion in grants to fund $10 billion to $14 billion dollars in capital-intensive renewable energy projects.

Germanys new climate change legislation calls for a 36% reduction in CO2 levels by 2020. Government leaders are also drafting a proposal to cut out coal completely by 2018. Canada continues to invest more funding into anaerobic digestion. Word broke today that the Canadian government, along with provincial and municipal bureaucracies, will partially fund four green infrastructure projects in the greater Montreal area. The four organic waste treatment centers will represent a total investment of $559M into the region. The Canadian government will chip in a total contribution valued at about $150M, and the provincial government of Quebec will contribute $165M. Other municipalities in the Montreal region will also donate their funds to the construction.

In Scotland, where the whiskey is king, a relatively new environmental technologyanaerobic digestionmay soon partner with the age-old method of distillery to satisfy much of the isles energy needs. Bruichladdich Distillery, located on the isle of Islay, plans to build two anaerobic digestives to convert thousand of tons of yeasty waste into methane gas. The methane gas will then be burned to create energy, with the help of Biowayste, a Northamptonshire firm that has installed five such plants.

Its good to remember that companies like Harvest Power arent building organic waste processing plants simply to create energy. Food waste is an important natural hazard, just like oil spills or carbon monoxide.
