The economic downturn has reduced foundation assets, forcing funders to cut expenses and limit grantmaking. Foundations suffered a 22 percent reduction in assets in late 2008, fairing much better than the overall market in general. As a result, 2009 witnessed the sharpest decline in grantmaking in decades. The 2010 outlook is much more promising as many foundations have recovered the majority of the lost assets since the market low point 1 year ago.

Without doubt the recession, or credit crunch, or whatever you're calling it, means that there is less money in society. People have had to make cutbacks to their family budgets. No matter how much they would like to be able to donate more, they are restricted by personal circumstances. Even those who haven't faced job cuts or salary reductions are saving more, the sudden economic catastrophe having made people less confident about their financial futures.

If the economic disasters over the last couple of years have taught us anything, it is that unique fundraising ideas are more important now than ever. Right across the board businesses have closed or downsized, jobs have been lost, salaries have been cut. In short there is less money around than there has been. Perhaps one of the biggest ironies is that just as people have less money with which to support fundraising events, non-profits face increased demands on their services.
